SOUTHERN HOUSES AMIGO DEPARTING TO-DAY CATALOGUE AND CONVEYER Ihc three-year-old Amigo, owned and trained by Mr. L. G. Paul, of Wanganui, and' the Awapuni horses Catalogue and Conveyer have arrived at Ellerslie and are to be shipped to Melbourne by the Wanganella,to-day. Amigo was on the track at Ellerslio doing easy work yesterday and he appears none the worse for his two races ■it' \\ anganui last week, when he linished second to Lucullus Lad in the SeaJield Handicap and second also to Russian Ballot in the Wanganui Guineas. Amigo finished gamely in both races and should bo a useful throe-year-old, although lie has not developed to any great extent since- racing last seasou.

Among Amigo's spring engagements s hi Australia are the Caulfield Cup with j 7.0 and the Melbourne Cup with 7.3, but his first race there will probably s he the Toorak Handicap, ono mile, at j Caulfield, on October 8. The weights . lor tho . Toorak Handicap have not yet 3 appeared, but are to be declared on Monday. Whether Amigo will prove a j stayer remains to bo seen and his pro- | gross in Australia will be watched with, interest. He is a three-year-old gelding 1 by Beau Poro - from Adorable, by 5 Limond from Adnivra, .by Solferino * from Temba, by Sainfoin, and his ; breeding is not. against him being able ■ to manage middle distances success- . i fully. i Catalogue is engaged in the Melbourne Clip with 8.-1. USEFUL SPRINTS ROYAL TRAY SHAPES WELL SLY FOX ALSO GOES SOLIDLY Several sprints wore recorded on tho course proper at Avondale yesterday, when the trestles were out 45ft. and tbe going was good. King Thco (Eloy) and Maioro (Wiggins) were just in front of Strathearu (Coughey) at tho conclusion of six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. The lirst three wero run in 41 3-os and the trio were not bustled. Sly Fox (J.- Mclnnlly) completed - strong work with three furlongs in 39 < 2-ss. He is carrying a bright and muscular appearance after his racing at Wanganui and should give a good ac- ; count of himself in the Champion Hack , Plate. ( Royal Tray (Wiggins) and Silver . Eagle (Eley) went nicely over three ( furlongs in" 39 l-os. Royal Tray is a ■ shapely filly, who moves with plenty , of freedom and is well forward. | INCREASED SHELTER ELLERSLIE IMPROVEMENTS More shelter and seating accommodation is to bo provided for patrons of the "Hill"., at Ellerslie. An overhanging roof is to .be erected on tho scraping sheds tfhich bound the members' carriage paddock and faco tho "Hill," and it is T anticipated that this will provide shelter for about 2500 people. A permanent seat is to be placed alongside the hedge on the edge of the grass slope, where 200_ movable lawn seats will also be utilised.. The work of erecting tho shelter is being put in hand right away, and when completed should be much, appreciated. Arrangements have been made for the convenient handling of horses arriving and leaving by motor-float on race days. ■ BARRIER EDUCATION * i YOUNG HORSES AT ELLERSLIE f t With Mr. G. L. Stead acting as starter a number of two-year-olds and novices were given barrier practice from the seven-furlong post on tho course proper at Ellerslio yesterday morning. ' The other lot to face the barrier * comprised Philcourt, La Vie, Trilliarch and Thurnavaals. The two-year-olds . began well, La Vie leading Thurna- * vaals over two furlongs in 26_4-ss" and * three in 39 3-ss. It was a pleasing effort 1 and both are capable of putting up good performances at Avondale. Philcourt and Trilliarch were not required to sprint and were prilled up after going a short distance. CIIRISTCHURCH JUMPERS j y PATUMA STRAINS HIS BACK t f.

[BY TELEGRAPH —own correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Dividend, Tho Sandwichman and Patuma wore companions over six hurdles to-day. Dividend soon took charge and led throughout, but ho was inclined to chance some of his fences and he hit tho last two heavily. The Sandwichman shaped satisfactorily but Patuma, after being with his mates for half tho journey, drifted, .and when he had completed tho task it was revealed ho was suffering from a strained back. He may not bo abb to raco on Saturday. A two-year-okl gelding by Robespierre from Zora, by Catmint from Verintia, tho darn or Gold Cross and Rebel Chief, is being put through his preliminaries at Riccarton by his owner-trainer, H. Roams. He is a solid youngster and will probably requiro plenty of time. VICTORIAN GALLOPER ECHO OF GAGOOLA CASE A runner in a maiden two-year-old race at Wcrribee, Victoria, recently was the Manfred gelding Mantalini, who finished third. Racegoers remember Stoplmnite, the dam of Mantalini, as tbe horse who brought about, the defeat of the mystery horse" Gagoola in tin; Uothsuy Trial Slakes, run at Klemiugton on June 8, ]931. On that day Gagoola was supported for a small fortune, which caused ins price to tumble until lie started favourite at 7 to 4. Stephanite, who was one of the outsiders of the race, was ridden by W. Klliot, and she scored a very easy win from Gagoola by three lengths. Sufficient evidence was later accumulated to identify Gagoola with tho New Zealand horse Simba, who had been sold to go to Australia some time I previously.
