SOCIAL SECURITY
Sir, —"Full Security" evaded my question almost as skilfully as Mr. Nash himself when explaining the financial side of this wonderful bill. I will ask him again how we can possibly expect an increase in our production when farmers are cutting down their herds owing to the shortage of labour? Evidently "Full Security" grudges money spent on defence; what would happen to our social services if some foreign Power invaded the country P Does he think they would just, carry on with the pensions and free medical attendance, etc. P We would certainly get free "medicine," but not the kind we would like or is suggested in this bill. Wondering.
gj ri —\ s one who has followed most of debates, etc., on this important venture, one must come to the conclusion it is real social security for the thriftless and sbcial insecurity for the thrifty. It seems sheer folly for the State'to attempt making provision for individuals who have made and are more capable of making their own securitv. 1 note that persons in employment at tho age of 60 can retire from work and come under this scheme. Why ask or even encourage able-bodied meii at; this age to cease work when many of such men with experience are just the very best, men we require, far better in most cases than men straight out of the colleges lacking practical experience. It seems that some sort of social scheme for people to make their own security is required, but care must he taken to avoid encouraging individuals to lean on tho State. The more people we have endeavouring to carve out their own destiny, the better for the State and community generally. One Who Thinks.
