WHANGAREI BOROUGH

LEVEL CROSSING WARNINGS SITE FOR RUBBISH DUMP [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, "Wednesday The Whangarei Borough Council has been advised by the Minister of Railways, the Hon. I). G. Sullivan, that a comprehensive survey of the whole of the level crossings in New Zealand was now being undertaken in order to ascertain the relative urgency of the need for equipping crossings with warning devices and that when this survey was compteted he would consider the question further in the light of the information received. In view of this position the council decided to defer the matter for six months so far as it a fleeted Whangarei. Permission was granted the Whangarei primary school, which is establishing a nursery for the propagation and cultivation of native trees, to obtain seedlings in one of the bush areas controlled by the council. After receiving full reports on the use of pinus insignia for building construction, the council refused permission to use .such timber for the interior work in a residence. It was reported by the traffic inspector that an inspection carried out in the early hours of one morning had revealed 77 motor vehicles parked in the streets without lights. The council decided that on this occasion warning notices be sent to the offenders, but that on any future inspection offenders are to be prosecuted. ".The Harbour Board was surprised to learn that the Borough Council intended to take, under the Public Works Act, one of our most valuable endowments. without consulting us," said the chairman of the Whangarei Harbour Board, Mr, .T. A. Finlayson, when a deputation from the board met the council. " We realise that the borough must have a.place for the dumping of rubbish," he added, " but consider that there are other areas available without taking this area from the board. We consider that the board would be quite prepared to transfer to the council free of cost an area of six acres of foreshore and also to transfer tho option tho board now holds over an adjacent property of 10 acres." A committee of the council was set up to inspect the proposed site with representatives of the board.
