ST.' JOHN AMBULANCE HAMILTON HEADQUARTERS WORK TO COST £3500 EARLY START TO BE MADE Financial arrangements have been completed lor the erection, of a modern, two-storeyed concrete building to servo r»s headquarters of the St. John Ambulance Association in Hamilton, according! to' Mr. S. E. Langstone, secretarymanager of the organisation in Auckland, .Mr. Langstone, said yesterday that tender!; would be called shortly for the construction of tho building, which would cost about £3500. It was anticipated that it would be completed toward the end of the rear.
A si ; to in Ward Street, centrally-F-vtnated, near tho Technical High School, had been given by tho Hamilton Borough Council, Mr. Langstone fcnid. The Hamilton branch of the organisation had collected nearly £I2OO toward the cost of tho new structure, and the balance, in the form of an overdraft, was being guaranteed by the Auckland centre, and would be repaid by the Hamilton branch.
Designed by the firm of Edgecumbe and White, architects, of Hamilton, the building will be on up-to-date lines. On the ground floor there will be the office, casualty room and garage, with accom'medation for four ambulances. On the upper storey will be three bedrooms, living room, kitchen and the usual conveniences. Mr. J. Scobie, formerly v of the, Auckland staff of the transport division, who has been in Hamilton for some time, will be officer in charge. "The two ambulances at present inuse in Hamilton aro kept at tho drivers' residences," Mr. Langstone eaid. "When the new building is ready, the men and machines will be housed at the Station, as is done at the Auckland headquarters. There is ample space on the section to erect a drill hall and • orderly rooms for members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade later, as funds ' permit." Mr. Langstone said that, apart from other / advantages, the central situation of the new station would be a decided improvement. He mentioned that both Whangarei and Dargaville already had ambulance stations and Kaid that no time would be lost in preparing the new building for Hamilton. Work would be put'in hand as soon as a tender had been accepted, and the ambulances would be transferred immediately the building was ready. .
