£30,000,000 RAILWAY
COMPLETION IN IRAN NO FOREIGN CAPITAL USED LONDON, Sept. 8 The 865-mile railway, linking the Persian Gulf with the Caspian Sea, the completion of which, at a cost of £30,000,000, the Iranians are now celebrating, was built without the aid of any foreign capital. Engineers of 11 nations, however—including British, American, Italian, Russian, Belgian, German, French and Greek—assisted in the work.
The construction took 11 years, the route being across mountains, valleys and deserts.
British engineers say the project could not have been undertaken but for tho Shah's idealism and courage. About 50,000 natives were employed. The white men often had blistered limbs, swollen tongues, and parched throats through working in a temperature of 132 in the shade.
