stone paperweight and paper knife, and a letter of appreciation of his writing on behalf of a committed of New Zealand readers.

William Wymark Jacobs was born in London. He studied for the civil service, and in ISS3 entered the savings bank department of the Post Oflice, where he remained for many years. He began to write comparatively late.

"Many Cargoes" was an instant success, and three years later he left the civil service to devote himself exclusively to writing. Most of Jacob's work consists of humorous sketches and short stories of seamen ashore and afloat, but he lias also written some powerful stories of tragedy and terror, notably "The Monkey's Paw."
