W. H. Smith, St. Albans Stud, Scone, New South Wales, for 2300 guineas. Hua is a four-vcar-old horse by Heroic from Gladioli, by Ethiopian from Earsome. The Derby candidate, Aeolus, was bought by W. Inglis aud Sons for 1600 guineas. Aeolus won tho Hobartville Stakes recently. Ho cost P. Riddle 150 guineas and is the winner of fivo races. He is by Baralong from Queen of Night, by Comedy King. With liis Memsio Stakes victory, Ajax entered the company of Australian and New Zealand gallopers, who have won more than £20,000 in stakes, his total at present being £20,400, making him the largest stake-winner in commission in this part of the world. Ajax has now won in his last eight starts and on the threshold of his four-year-old racing, he should add greatly to his record of winnings, b\it even if he wins the £7OOO and trophy worth £2OO as the first horse's share of the Melbourne Cup stake, he will still bo less than half-way to Phar Lap's record of £66,738. The re-establishment of classic races was considered this week by tho committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club and it was decided to defer this matter to the February meeting so that it can be decided then whether entries are to be called on general entry day.

Galleon, who raced well in the second half of last season, is not to be taken in hand again until next month. He lias always been a difficult horse to keep in condition and his trainer intends to give him the benefit of the early spring grass.

After being mated with Nigger Minstrel last season, Amelita was kept in training. She won three races and wros placed in eight other events. She did not prove to be in foal, and may be mated with that sire again.

Valantua, who is being discussed in connection with the New Zealand Cup, which was won bv Ins hall-sister. Pnlant.ua, in record time, has been entered for the Ashburton Handicap, but not for events at the Geraldme meeting.
