WIDOW FINED £lO
GUILTY OF SHOPLIFTING "NO NECESSITY TO STEAL" "There was no necessity for this woman to steal, and I have formed the opinion that tho mode of theft was very deliberate," said Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday, in fining Elizabeth Amy Carmody, widow, aged 42 (Mr. Aekins), who appeared for sentence on a charge of shoplifting. She previously admitted stealing a lady's cardigan from a city shop on Friday. Counsel pleaded for leniency in view of accused's previous good character. Tho magistrate said he proposed to make the sentence something . accused would feel. She had brazenly put the cardigan over her arm, instead of hiding it under her coat, and thus set up a bluff which almost succeeded. "Accused is comfortably off and has money in the bank," said the'magistrate, imposing a fine of £lO, in default 21 days' imprisonment.
