Armstrong, t the 1 Cabinet 'had under consuleran the question of whether tho Second r,'° t of Arbitration would continue to function after the term for which it L established expired in I\ovembcr. The Minister said whatever decision as made would not affect the position ff f Jlr. Justice Hunter, who was permanently . appointed a Judge of tho Supreme Court. Many avenues of employment could bo found for him in his judicial capacity.
Mr. Armstrong said it -was possible that in future industrial magistrates would be appointed to hear local awards and other minor cases, leaving the Arbitration Court free to deal with Dominion awards "and compensation cases. It would then also act as a Court of Appeal in disputed decisions of tho magistrates in respect to awards and workers' compensation cases. "We have already appointed one industrial magistrate and he is likely to commence his duties in Auckland this week," said tho Minister. "Mr. It. D. Lumsden, officer, of the branch of the Labour Department in has gone to Auckland to act as registrar of the Arbitration Court temporarily in place of Mr. J. A. Gilmour, who is the industrial magistrate appointed." The Minister added that in tho event of the Second Court of Arbitration being disposed of, it was possible that Mr. H. F. Butland, registrar of that Court, would be permanently appointed registrar of the Arbitration Court.
