ENTERTAINMENTS

CIVIC THEATRE Fine performances are given by the young Indian actor Sabu and by Raymond Massey in tho Alexander Korda production "The Drum," which will continue the second week of its season at the Civic Theatre to-day. The story is adapted from a novel by A. E. W. Mason and • deals with life beyond the North-West Frontier of India, interesting associate features include a "March of Time" and a "Popular Science," while Penn Hughes will be heard in several items on the Wurlitzer organ. RECENT THEATRE A feud between rival taxicab companies forms part of the plot in the exciting film "big City," which is to he shown at the Regent Theatre today. Lending roles are taken by Spencer Tracy, who gives a powerful characterisation as a cab driver, and beautiful Luise Raincr, as his wife. There is an excellent supporting programme, which includes newsreels and comedies. ST. JAMES' THEATRE Adapted from the novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, the splendid Metro-Goldwyn-Mavcr production "Three Comrades" wif 1 he shown to-day at St. James' Theatre. The film depicts in a vivid manner the conditions in Germany after the Great War, when work is scarce and social unrest evident everywhere. The main roles are capably portrayed by Robert Taylor, Margaret Sullavan. Franehot Tone and Robert Young. The enjoyable supporting programme includes a Pete Smith specialty, a Robert Benchley novelty and newsreels dealing with topical events. MAYFAIR THEATRE flic entertaining comedy "Kentucky Moonshine" is to be shown at the May-' fair Theatre to-day in continuance of a. successful season. Leading roles are taken by the amusing Ritz brothers, who give splendid performances as "hillbillies" signed for broadcasting contracts. The supporting cast includes Tony Martin, Marjorie Weaver, Slim Summerville and Wallv Vernon.

MAJESTIC THEATRE William Boyd appears as Hopalong Cassidy in the refreshing western film "Heart of Arizona," to be shown at the Majestic Theatre to-day. The second attraction on this entertaining programme is the dramatic production, "Hunted Men," in which Lloyd Nolan and Mary Carlisle are prominently cast. STRAND THEATRE The sweet voice of Deanna Durbin is heard in a number of songs in "Mad About Music," to-day's attraction at the Strand Theatre. Miss Durbin appears as a fatherless girl at a Swiss boarding school. She becomes envious of other girls, invents a father of her own, and the film ends happily when her adopted parent meets and marries Miss Durbin's mother. The second attraction is "Carnival Queen," in which appear Robert Wilcox and Dorothea Kent. EMBASSY THEATRE The antics of the peculiar Ivilbourne family provide bright entertainment in the splendid comedy "Merrily We Live," to be presented at the Embassy Theatre to-day. Brian Alierne is cast as a young novelist who makes his way to the Ivilbourne home when his car breaks down. Billie Bnrke, who appears as Mrs. Ivilbourne, has a penchant for adopting tramps, and when Alierne comes on the scene she mistakes him for a "brother of the road" and insists that he stay with the family.

' TIVOLI THEATRE Guest-night concessions will be available for patrons of the Tivoli Theatro to-night, when an outstanding programme will be presented. Jack Holt gives a good performance in the exciting film "The Awakening of Jim Burke," while Peter Lorre and Edward Arnold appear in "Crime and Punishment." Excellent associate features, including a comedy, "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," a cartoon, "Scrappy's' Ghost Story," and a musical film, "Gobs of Trouble," will also be presented. PRINCE EDWARD THEATRE Caesar, the famous canine actor, appears in "Trailing the Killer," tonight's attraction at the Prince Edward Theatre. The picture vividly depicts life in the north-west American woods, where the survival of the fittest is the law that governs all wild creatures. The supporting film is the bright production "Variety." CRYSTAL PALACE AND RIALTO The appealing voice of Arthur Tracy, "The Street Singer," is heard in the musical film "Command Performance," to be presented at the Crystal Palace and Rialto Theatres to-night. Will Fyffe and John Loder appear in the second attraction, "Owd Bob," a film of the Scottish highlands. STATE THEATRE The screen version of Rudolph Friml's beautiful composition "The Firefly" will continue the second week of its successful season at the State Theatro to-night. "Donkey's Serenade" and "Lore is Like a Firefly" are among the several beautiful songs rendered by Jeanetto Mac Donald and Allan Jones in the film. STAR CINEMA The dramatic film "Bulldog Drummond Comes Back" is to be presented at the Star Cinema to-day. The associate attraction is the entertaining picture "Storm in a Teacup."

BERKELEY, MISSION BAY George Sanders gives a splendid characterisation in "Lancer Spy," the thrilling film to be presented at the Berkeley Theatre, Mission Bay, tonight. Tho second attraction is the entertaining picture "Miss Pacific Fleet." TUDOR CINEMA The voice of Grace Moore is heard to advantage in tho musical production "I'll Take Romance," to bo shown at tho Tudor Cinema to-night. There is a comprehensive supporting programme.
