NEED FOR PREPAREDNESS TENSENESS IN EUROPE STATEMENT BY MR. SAVA'GE [by telegraph—special reporter! WELLINGTON, Sunday The desire of the Government to make New Zealand's defenco as secure as possiblo was emphasised by tho Prams Minister, Mr. Savage, in nn interview at the conclusion of the meeting of the Council of Defence held on Saturday morning. Mr. Savage said tho meeting had not been specifically called because of tho present tenseness in European affairs, but tho council had originally been established because of unsettled world conditions, and subsequent developments had justified the Government's action.
" The heads of the three services— Army, Navy and Air Force —were present at the meeting," the Prime Minister said, "and naturally the present position in Europo was discussed. We are hoping that wiser councils will prevail in Europe and that peace will be maintained, but, of course, we must bo prepared for anything. We are in daily communication with the British Government, which is' keeping us fully advised concerning the present situation."
Mr. Savage emphasised that the Government was not hiding anything from the people and was not holding any information in reserve to "spring on the public."
