LOSS TO MAORIS

DEATH OF TU RAKURAKU TANGI HELD AT WAIMANA [BY TEXEGHAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE. Tuesday Maoris from the tribes of the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay attended a large tangi during the week-end at Tanatana, Wairaana, for Tu Rakuraku, the principal chief of the Tuhoe tribe of the Urewera, who died at Waimana on Thursday, aged 76. Of very ancient chiefly descent, Tu Rakuraku had a good knowledge of Maori genealogies and history, and it was from him that the late Mr. Elsdon Best gained much information for his Authoritative work on the Tuhoe tribe.

Tu llakuraku, who is survived by his second wife and ten sons and daughters, was industrious and a good farmer, and 6et an excellent example to his tribesmen in this respect. Ho was noted for his hospitality and co-operated well with Government officials.
