PAINTING OF MAORI

COLLECTOR'S SYDNEY FIND WORK OF MR. C. F. GOLDIE [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Tuesday While spending a holiday in Sydney, Mr. T. H. Smith, of Wanganui, who is a keen collector of Maori curios, noticed in an art dealer's shop a painting of a Maori head. On examination it proved to be an example of the work of the well-known Auckland artist, Mr. C. F. Goldie. He immediately secured an option on the picture and later purchased it.

Mr. Smith stated that the picture is an excellent example of Mr. Goldie's talent for Maori characterisation. He had not yet been able to identify the subject, but proposed to make inquiries on his return to Wanganui. His present intention was to offer it to the Wangn--11 ui Museum for exhibition and also to the Serjeant Art Gallery in Wanganui, although he had not yet decided whether he would actually dispose of it

"It is quite impossible to identify the picture fiom the description given," said Mr. C. F. Goldie yesterday when he was asked to comment 011 the Wellington message. "1 have sold several pictures in Sydney, and I know that a number of others sold in Auckland have gone out of the Dominion. It is not at all remarkable that one of my paintings should have found its way into the hands of a Sydney dealer. If the purchaser communicates with me I shall probably have 110 difficulty in giving him any information lie requires."
