CANCER CAMPAIGN
NINTH ANNUAL MEETING REVIEW OF PROGRESS [by TELEGRAPH —Pit ESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday The work of tho New Zealand branch of tho British Empire Cancer Campaign Society was briefly reviewed at tho ninth annual meeting to-day. Sir James Elliott, of Wellington, presided. Delegates representing the four divisions of tho society in New Zealand were welcomed by tho president and by tho Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. It. M. Macfarlane.
Sir James Elliott, in presenting the report, said that tho society was distinctive in that it achieved a happy combination of government through tho Health Department, hospital boards, tho medical profession and tho general public in a common attack upon the disease of cancer. Tho public would no doubt bo very gratified to learn that tho-society could see aftor nino years a very definite improvement in tho results of treatment given. It encouraged tho society to believe that it would, as time went on, get even better results. It was generally agreed that cancer taken in its early stages was curable and this was why the society wished to educate members of the public to take advico when they thought all was not well with them. At the moment there were 2640 cases under observation. cancer conference will be held in Wellington from February 14 to February 18, 1939. This will bo tho first time tho conference has been held in New Zealand. Sir James Elliott was re-elocted chairman. Ho has held this office since tho inception of tho society. Sir Louis Barnett and Sir Hugh Acland were re-elected vice-presidents, and tho finance committee, consisting of Sir James Elliott, Mr. A. E. Allison and Dr. P. P. Lynch, was also re-elected.
