HASTINGS WORK

HUNTER'S EYE FIT

SOUND HALF-MILE GALLOP TWO-YEAR-OLDS IN ACTION HAGEN AND LAUGHING SONG [BY TELEGRU'H OWN correspondent] HASTINGS. Monday Horses for the Taranaki and Wanganui meetings were galloped at Hastings over tho week-end. Tho bracks were slightly holding. Hunter's Eve, the first horse out, gave tho best effort of the morning when running four furlongs in 49 2-5s on the inside grass. y Tho other gallops took place on tho outside of tho courso proper with tho trestles 20ft. out.

Brunhild, who looks much improved, I was restricted to strong pace work. Sko has only to continue 011 tho same wav as in tho last two months to win in select company. Trailer and Iddo registered 1.35 for seven furlongs, finishing abreast. The two Lord Quex colts, from Rapallo and Nukerakau respectively, ran two furlongs in 25 2-ss. Ivar, although he lias grown since last season, has not yet furnished and lie is inclined to hit the ground rather hard when galloping. However, he is still very brilliant. He was hard held all the way to record 40s for throe furlongs. Imogen ran over tho ground in 42s against the bit, while Diana Tetrix occupied 55s for four furlongs. Lindrum covered three in 3Ss.

Jazz Boy, in a working gallop, recorded 1.8 for five furlongs. Hagen and Laughing Song, wide out, pleased by getting to tho end of half . a mile in 545. Both these three-year-olds are most promising and likely stayers. Arachne Speedy Arachne, Silver Court and tho 1 Myosotis —Lady Desmond filly recorded 25s for two. furlongs. All are brilliant gallopers, particularly Arachne, who is a fdly by Lord Quex from Tino Waiata. Royal Minstrel, having his first run since going wrong on the eve of tho Waikato spring meeting, easily accounted for Bed Cockade over five furlongs in 1.7 3-5. He has only to keep right to win first-class handicap races. Tres See took 1.52 for a mile, being picked up by Misurina for the last seven furlongs, which took 1.37. Misurina was always in front. Master Cyklon, under restraint, ,recorded 1.20 for six furlongs, being assisted home over the last four by Thala in 555. The Defoe —Valquette and the Kincardine —Lady . Quex two-year-olds ran three furlong's in -41s, with the former, who is the longest-striding youngster in this district, well clear. He looks like developing into a really good galloper. _-Colenso, who is to go to Taranaki for the Bracelet races, has been working " exceptionally well. Ho ran away from Refulgent and was easing up at tho end of six furlongs run in 1.24. Bambian, tho Fondle colt, Silver Bat, Arabic , and the Polonaise filly finished in that; order at short intervals oyer half a mile, the winner recording 53 l-ss. All are three-year-olds with the exception of the two-year-old Silver y Bat. She got badly away and in the circumstances, did well to get up into third place at the finish. She goes to Wanganui and in all probability will go on to Avondale for the Stakes. Return o1 Speed Haile Selassie, for five furlongs, occupied 1.7 3-5. Soho did well in running six in 1.20. Tycoon, who 12 months ago was ordered to bo destroyed, after being injured, was hardly tho equal of Red Shoes over half a mile in 555. The Defoe filly in G. Greene's stable and the blue roan filly by Lord Quex Syivanus took 26 l-ps for a quarter, but both were against tho bit. Speed, who had not jumped for two years,' when last ho raced, brilliantly took three hurdles. He has shown every sign of standing up to training. Red Rufusand Hamarin, over four hurdles, jumped cleanlv until the latter slipped into the last fence, dislodging his rider. Boat Song and Thrasher, were schooled together also. Although making no errors, they were not as impressive as tho former pair. Over nine steeplechase fences, Nino Martini and Kikiroki gave a fast and straight exhibition. Lovelilt and Coil made no mistakes over a round. Paul Robeson, alone, made the best effort of the morning over his round of the hurdles. ELLERSLIE DOINGS ALL IRISH WORKING AGAIN After being off the scene for several months, Trevaco has been taken in hand again by his owner-trainer, Mr. C. M. Emanuel. After the Grand National meeting it was intended to spell All Irish, but plans have now been changed and the good jumper will be kept going in view of the hurdle events at the Avondale meeting. All Irish has come through his winter racing in fine stylo and his solid condition should stand to him in his forthcoming engagements. Owing to suffering a slight leg injury, the promising two-year-old, La Vie, has been an absentee from the track the last few days. However, tho injury has responded well to treatment and sho is expected to resume work this week. _ TT The Rotorua horses Kcna and Horowhenua were taken over to Avondalo last week to bo prepared for the forthcoming meeting. . Tho two-year-olds, Dark Legion and Bide-a-Weo, were given barrier practice in the middle at Ellerslie yesterday morning. Dark Legion displayed the more aptitude and in- tho final essay - jumped away well. • . Although ho has not been required to do anything of an outstanding nature since racing at the Pakuranga meeting, Clu;val de Voice lias worked pleasingly at Ellerslie and his appearance suggest that he has improved a, good deal. Tho Te Awamutu gelding is engaged in the Stewards' Handicap at the combined hunt meeting at !New Plymouth next Saturday, but no decision has yet boon made as to whether ho will make the trip. SOLD FOR 12£ GUINEAS NORTH CAPE PROVES BARGAIN Last March Mr. W, It. Kemball sent several horses into tho sale-ring in Melbourne. One of them was North Cape, who was purchased by Mr. K. J. Neighbour for I2i guineas. On Saturday North Capo won tho Paisley Hurdles at 'Williamstown, which was his fifth success in luirdlo races during _ tho last few weeks.
