Mr. Haslam has a good record behind him, and his first post will be greatly to his credit when he conies to look for a permanent position after the completion of the report next year. Mr. Haslam took his B.A. in Modern Greats in lfW< with a second. This year he worked on a B.Litt., and he has been informed unofficially that he has passed. In addition to his academic studies, Mr. Haslam took an active part at Oxford in some of the University societies, in particular a group of Rhodes scholars and United Kingdom students called the Commonwealth Group. The purpose of the group is to study and report on the political, social and economic problems of the British Commonwealth. In addition to keeping Rhodes scholars in different colleges in contact with one another at Oxford, it also gives English students the Dominions' point of view. Mr. Haslam was secretary of the group last year.

The New Zealander has been able to travel widely on the Continent in connection with his studies. In 1936, in the summer vacation, he was in Russia and Germany for eight weeks, cycling a great deal in Germany. In 1937 he worked for six weeks by special arrangement on the staff of the International Labour Office at Geneva. At Oxford Mr. Haslam rowed in the winter, anc last February rowed for his college in the bump races. In the summer he played tennis. He also made good use of his opportunities for skiing, and spent some of the Christmas vacation ol 1935-3(3 at Vorarlberg, Austria. At Easter, 1937, he went to Norway, and last Easter he went to Switzerland.
