LOCAL FRUIT SALES

STATE CONTROL OPPOSED GROWERS' STAND EXPLAINED [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] HASTINGS, Monday A suggestion that has been widely circulated thjit the Government was requested by the recent Dominion conference to take, over the sale of fruit throughout New Zealand was refuted by Mr. It. Payntcr, a former chairman of the Fruit Export Control Board, when addressing a meeting of growers at Hastings. Mr. Pavnter explained that the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, was approached to co-operate with the growers in ordering the system

of distribution of fruit throughout the Dominion. He doubted if 10 per cent of the growers would favour the Government taking over the industry. The suggestion was made by Mr. A. Lowe, who was also a delegate to the conference, that the problem confronting the industry could possibly largely be overcome by widening the powers of the present Emit Control Board to includo local marketing as well as export. He was satisfied that the two could not be separated.
