KILLS THIEF
ELDERLY INVALID ATTACKED IN PARK MELBOURNE SENSATION ACCOUNT OF STRUGGLE By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August 28, .11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 28 Strangled by an elderly invalid pensioner in a suburban park on Saturday night, a thief was killed while attempting to rob the pensioner. The dead man, who was aged 23 years, had a criminal record.
Police who were called found the dead man lying across the pensioner's arm, the latter being apparently in a state of collapse, with his fingers still entwined in the dead man's tie and collar. The pensioner, whose face and scalp were severely lacerated, said that the man had spoken to him and had induced him to enter tho park, where he attacked him, demanding money.
A long struggle followed, and in a desperate attempt to save himself the old roan seized his assailant's shirt collar and twisted it against his windpipe. Hearing cries, a pedestrian came to the pensioner's assistance and telephoned for the police. After treatment at a hospital, the pensioner was allowed to go home.
