MILK BELOW STANDARD

LEAK IN WATER COOLER EXPLANATION ACCEPTED "I am rather tired of hearing the same excuse in this type of case about the faulty water cooler that no one knew anything about," said Mr. W. B. McKean, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when fining a Henderson farmer for selling milk below standard. The defendant, Arthur Parish, denied two charges of selling milk containing less than the required amount of milk solids and 8 per cent of added water. An officer of the Health Department, Mr. E. 0. Miles, gave evidence of taking a test of defendant's milk on June 24 after receiving a complaint about it. The sample was taken from the waggon of the cartage agent employed by defendant to transport the milk to the city. Correspondence from defendant asserted that a leak in the water cooler attached to his milking machines was responsible for the extra water in his supply. Defendant said he had been a city milk supplier for 26 years without a single previous complaint against his milk. He understood that the first breach would have resulted in a warning. An examination of his water cooler by an engineer revealed a fault, and he said he was certain this caused the trouble without his knowledge. The magistrate said he would accept defendant's explanation that the water got into the milk inadvertently, and imposed a lino of £1 10s, with costs, £1 15s.
