LINEN TAKEN

married woman charged "This is an extraordinary and inexplicable case in every respect," said Mr. Tong, counsel for Elizabeth Katherine Labourn, married, aged 52, who appeared in the Polico Court yesterday, charged with stealing linen worth £2 14s from Margaret Morris, on December 1 last. She pleaded guilty. Evidence was given that accused was a nurse, who had been employed at the Bonnv Brae Best Home at the time the offence occurred. In a statement she said she took the linen home to wash it and forgot to return it before going to Christchurch for a holiday. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said accused had previously borne an excellent character, and had never been before the Court. Counsel said accused had been working long hours at special nursing to supplement the family income. She did not need the articles concerned, and it was difficult to know why she took them. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, refusing an order for suppression of the name, ordered accused to make restitution within a week, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
