EX-SOLDIERS' RELIEF

PROVISION THIS SESSION STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT The opinion that returned soldiers would derive no benefits under the Government's social security plan, expressed by a member at the quarterly meeting of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association at the Lewis Eady Hall on Thursday evening, prompted the president, Mr. J. W. Kendall, to explain that a further bill would be introduced this session, dealing with returned soldiers. It was claimed by the member that under tho social security scheme the maximum would lie £3 10s a week, as at present. The Government, he said, had taken 15s off sustenance and put it on the pension. The secretary, Mr. R. S. Mason. saVl that at the recent conference in Wellington of the Dominion association it bad been decided to press lor a war veterans' allowance of 30s a week for each man. 15s lor his wife and 10s for each child with a maximum of £4 5s a week, and £1 income to be allowed. In reply to further questions Mr. Mason said it was not necessary to prove that sufferings were directly due to war service, in order to derive relief. If an applicant could show that any complaint from which he. was suffering was aggravated by war service he would receive a pension. The financial statement for the quarter ended on June 30 showed a credit balance of £783. A tribute was paid to Mr. Kendall for his work on behalf of returned soldiers.
