NEW TYPE CAR

ITALIAN'S INVENTION NOVEL POWER TRANSMISSION LONDON, August 22 A power transmitter, combining tlio functions of back clutch and gear-box. was described by Captain D. C. Lea, formerly Professor of Engineering at Sheffield and Birmingham Universities to-day. He read a paper at the Science Congress descriptive of the invention of Comniendatori Piero Salcrni, Italian research engineer, living in London, who says that it will not bo the monopoly of any country. The principle is also applicable to steam turbines. The invention replaces the gear-box by a centrifugal pump, driven by an engine, and pumping oil to a turbine containing reaction elements. The turbine conveys the power so developed to a driving shaft. Everything is regulated from the accelerator. The only other gadget is a reverse lever. Scientists tested the car, which Captain Lea stated had undergone tests over 65,000 miles. It does 21 miles to the gallon and starts readily with a full load on a quarter grade with surprising acceleration.
