LITTER IN STREETS

DAMAGE BY WORKMEN COMPLAINTS AT OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL CONCERN v The litter left in the streets and the damage caused to grass verges by workmen of the Post and Telegraph Department was deplored by members of the Otahuhu Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night. Mr. F. W. Grey said some of the streets had been left in a "disgusting condition" by the department's workmen. Fires had been lit for lunches, papers were strewn about, and motortrucks had been backed across grass verges, which had been cut badly. Chips cut from line-poles and pieces of wire were lying in the grass and it would be almost impossible for the council's motor-mower to be used. He suggested that the district engineer be asked to ensure that the men took more care.

The Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., said his attention had been drawn to the complaints and he had instructed the engineer to go into the matter. It would be better to speak to the officials rather than officially write to the department. It was decided to adopt that course.
