WOMEN'S TOURNEY MATCH PLAY BEGUN MRS. FULLERTON-SMITH DEFEAT BY MISS CBAGO By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 22, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY,, August 22 The surprise of the first round of match play in the Australian women's open golf championship today was the defeat of Mrs. R. S. Fullerton-Smith (New Zealand) at the hands of the young- Sydney player Miss B. Crago."Miss J. Horwell (New Zealand) also was eliminated and Miss V. Fleming is now the Dominion's only representative. Results to-day were:—Miss Crago defeated Mrs. Fullerton-Smith, 5 and 4;' Miss J. Lewis (Victoria) defeated Miss Horwell, 4 and 2; Miss Fleming defeated Miss M. Rankin, 5 and 4; Miss Sydney Jones defeated MifjS G. Stark, 5 and 3; Miss E. Kernot defeated Miss M. Corry, 3 and 2; Mrs. C. Robinson defeated Miss G. Gardiner, 5 and 3; Miss V. Ebert defeated Mrs. L. W. Horo, 6 and 5; Mrs. T. McKay defeated Mrs. Clements, 5 and 3. The matches were played in torrential rain on a sodden course. Mrs. Ful-lerton-Smith was completely out of touch. She appeared to be forcing her shots, a number of which she topped, especially spoons and Jong irons. She was 3 down at the fourth, but won the fifth and eighth to turn 1 down. Miss Crago, however, secured par figures at the next five holes, four of which she won. Miss Horwell's defeat can be attributed partly to her bad putting and partly to her opponent's fine play. Miss Horwell took three putts on five greens. She was also short occasionally with her approaches and paid the full pen-. alty in the bunkers. Miss Lewis reached the turn in 38, two over par, to be 3 up, and went on to a comfortable win. Miss Fleming was untroubled by the conditions. She played very steadily, if not brilliantly, throughout, as she did in the Tasman Cup matches on Friday. Her approach putts were'extraordinarily accurate. Miss Flensing turned 4 up and made her tally 5 at the lltli, the match ending on. the 14th green. Miss Fleming to-morrow meets Miss Robinson, a former Australian open champion.
