BOAT HARBOUR

THE ORAKEI SCHEME COUNCIL OF WOMEN OPPOSITION EXPRESSED A protest against the proposal to use Okaliu Bay as a boat harbour was unanimously adopted at a meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women held last night. Mrs. B. S. Judson reported to the council upon the meeting of Orakei residents held on July 28, at which those who attended had voiced their protests against the proposed scheme. Miss G. M. Hernus presided. A map in which the site was outlined was produced by Miss Ellen Melville, who stated that if the proposal wero carried out it would mean that about 16 feet of timber piles would show at low tide. Mrs. A. M. Hutchinson said that while she had no wish to see the beauty of the waterfront marred in any way, she would point out that the harbour was a valuable playground for men and boys, and that a boat harbour in any part of Auckland would, to a certain extent, spoil the existing view. A letter from the Minister of Customs in reply to one from the council with regard to the importation and sale of pernicious literature was read by the secretary. The letter stated that the Government was aware of the problem presented by these importations, and the council's representations for the imposition of further restrictions would receive consideration on tho next occasion upon which the whole question of the importation of literature in New Zealand came under review. It was decided, after some discussion on the Government's recent action concerning this matter, to send the original remit to the Dominion executive meeting. Another matter, which engaged the attention of the council, was the licensing laws of the Dominion. The council protested emphatically against any alteration in the existing licensing laws relative to the transference of redundant liquor licences to other districts.
