MEAT IN LONDON

PRICES AT SMITHFIELD

ADVANCE IN LAMBS CHILLED BEEF FIRMER Prime lambs have advanced on the Smithfield market, owing to the relative scarcity of good quality lambs, according to the weekly report of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. Second quality lamb is steadier. The demand for wethers and ewes continues poor, and values are weaker, whero any alteration took place. Chilled beef is firmer, owing to cooler weather and a better demand. The market for New Zealand porker pigs is quiet and unchanged. Prices for baconcrs have declined owing to heavy supplies \ind a weak market. Boneless bobby veal is nominally quoted at 4d per lb., ox store. Little is available. Following are ruling prices of wholesale quantities announced by the board, together with values ruling at the close of the previous week: — FROZEN MUTTON Aug. 11 Aug. 18 per lb. per lb. d (J New Zealand—• Crosbrcd wethers and/or maiden ewes: Under 481b . . 5 5 40-50lb .. ..4% 4% cwfc>4lb * * •. 4% 4% 05-721b . . . . 4Va 4'/ a Ewes: Under 481b .. .. 3% 3% 40-50lb .. .. 3/n 3% 57-(i4lb .. .. »y B 3 65-721b . . . . 3 2% FROZEN LAMB Canterbury: Under 3611) .. .. 7Va 7% 37-4211) .. .. 7Mi 7% 43-r.Olb . . . . 1% 7% Second quality, average about 311b .. .. 6% GVb Other South Island! NEW SEASON'S POTATOES THE FIRST GREEN PEAS' Fruit was in better demand at the City Markets yesterday than for some time and apples met with an improved inquiry. Most of the fruit offered was of good quality and prices remained moderate. The Wanganella on Wednesday brought a large consignment of Queensland pineapples anil Australian oranges and mandarins, the pineapples selling at low rates. Fiji bananas arrived by the Maunganui on Wednesday and Samoan bananas by the Hauraki. A fresh shipment of Fiji bananas, kumaras, paw paws and tomatoes will be unloaded from the Aorangi on Monday. Heavy supplies <sl vegetables were offered, cauliflowers selling »at the lowest price this year. Cabbages were also plentiful, but prices remained firm for the best quality. Lettuce and celery were marketed in good quantities and high prices were maintained for tlie best quality lines. The supply of poultry was medium and the demand only fair, prices remaining the same for table birds. There was no change in egg prices. More cut flowers were offered and brought fairly good prices.
