DEATH OF MR. A. H. HOBBS EARLY CANTERBURY FAMILY [ISY TEr.EGIIAPH OWN COIIRESVONDENt] CHRISTCHURCIT, Friday A member of a family that settled in Canterbury before the arrival of the First Four Ships, Mr. A. H. Hobbs, aged 72, died suddenly last evening while attending a meeting of the vestry of St. Matthew's Church, with which he had been associated for very many years. Mr. Hobbs was prominent in the Masonic Lodge and the Justices of the Pence Association. His father, Mr. William Benjamin Hobbs. came out to New Zealand in the 'forties and joined the Rhodes family at Pui'au. Me married in Christchurch and Mr. A. H. Hobbs was born in St. Albans, where he lived all his life.

Hobbs was i m mini in to past deputy grand master of the .Masonic 1 of New Zealand and had been associated for many years with the Concord Lodge, of Papanui. lie was also immediate past president of the New Zealand Justices of the Peace Association. He maintained a life-long interest in the Church of Kngland. In his youth Mr. Hobbs played football for the Morivale Club. He was a member of the Christchurch Garrison Hand, which is now defunct, but which was once a champion band. Mr. Hobbs married • I >s years ago ]\l.iss Lilian Midglov, also a member of an old Christchurch family. He is survived by his widow, two daughters and three sons.
