OBITUARY
MR. JOHN NICHOLSON The death has occurred of Mr. John Nicholson, aged SO. who has been licensee of the Criterion Hotel, Otahuhu, for the last 17 years. Mr. Nicholson, who was born in Auckland, was (ho son of the building contractor who built the Old Stone .lug Hotel, and the original Auckland Hotel in Wyndhani Street. in bis youth he went to sea and travelled in many of the old sail inn ships. Returning to the Dominion, he worked in the bush for some years hefore taking up hotel-keeping in the Mercury Bay district. He was later licensee of tho Kohukohu Hotel. Hokianga, for 1(3 years, and in 101G took over the Star Hotel, Otahuhu. Five years later he became licensee of the Criterion Hotel. In his youth Mr. Nicholson was a keen oarsman and competed with success at many of tho East Coast regattas. He was also keenly interested in horse-racing and was the owner of several winners at country meetings. Ho was a member of the Otahuhu Trotting Club prior to it merging with the Auckland Club. Mr. Nicholson is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter MR. C. H. KINGSFORD The death has occurred of Mr. Charles Hansoomb Kingsford, of G Ocean View Eoad, INlilford. at the age of 04 years. Mr. Kingsford, who was a sou of Auckland pioneers, was apprenticed to the saddlery trade and later was a partner in a saddlery business in Queen Street. Manv years ago Mr. Kingsford established a sports and leather goods shop, which he conducted tip to the time of his death. An accomplished musician, Mr. Kingsford was for successive periods organist and choirmaster at -All Saints' Church, Ponsonby, Holy Trinity, Devonport. Epiphany. Newton. St. Peter's. Takapuna, and St. Paul's-by-the-Sea, Milford. Latterly he was again organist and choirmaster at St. Peter's, Tnkapuna. and was a member of the vestry. For HO years Mr. Kingsford was a member of the Auckland Poyal Male Choir. As a young man he was a keen footballer and in later years bo took an active interest in golf, bowls and tennis. He is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter.
ME. J. TOMBLESON Tho (loath lias occurred in Auckland, following an operation, of Mr. John Tornbleson, a well-known sbcepfarmer* aged 71 years. Ho was a member of several local bodies, and chairman of tho Gisborne Harbour Hoard for tho past 10 years. Ho took a prominent part in llio volunteer movement in liis earlier years, holding tlio rank of cantain. MRS. JANET WALKER _ Tbe death lias occurred at East Tamaki ot Mix. .Ja.net Walker, a pioneer resident of the Clevedon district, in her 85th year. Mrs. Walker arrived Irom Kngland with hor parents by the ship Viola as a girl of 10. After her marriage to the late Mr. George Walker, she lived for a very long period at Ardmore, where her husband farmed a property until his death some 15 years ago. Mrs. Walker is survived by three sons. MRS. FRANK TAIT [llY TELKGItAI'H —I'ItKXS ASSOCIATION'] WELLINGTON, Friday A cablegram received this morning by Mr. .15. J. 'fait, managing-director of J. C. Williamson, Limited, who is visiting Wellington, advised him of tho death of bis sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Tait, of Melbourne. Mrs. Tait visited America with Mr. and Mrs. Kiehard Crooks last year. During her stay with them'slm became very ill and had not greatly improved when she returned to Australia at the end of last year. She leaves three daughters.
