HARBOUR RESCUE
CAPTAIN'S PROMPT ACTION SEAMAN'S LIFE SAVED [BY TKLK.GRAI'II OWN C 011H10 Sl' O NI)F.NTJ NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday A seaman aboard tlie steamer Totara was saved from drowning by the prompt adieu of Captain R. Pearson. Two soiilnun were returning to the ship when ono lost his footing and fell into the harbour between the ship and tht wharf piles. His companion went up the gangway and informed the captain that his friend had fallen. The captain climbed down the side of the wharf and found the man floating face downward under the wha.vf. He plunged into the water, turned the man over and struggled with him to a cross beam. The second engineer of the Totara, Mr. J. Humphreys, rushed to the assistance with a rope, and rescuer and rescued were hauled up on to the wharf. The seaman was in a semi-conscious condition and had a slight wound on the. head. He had apparently struck a fender when falling. A doctor said that hut for the prompt action of Captain Pearson the man would have been drowned.
