THE LEAGUE CODE

NEWTON TEAM'S WIN ,TWENTY-TWO POINTS TO 12 CANTERBURY LOSES CHANCES The Newton club team defeated the visiting Canterbury Rugby League representatives bv 22 points to 12 in a return game played at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon. The visitors had numerous opportunities, but lack of finish and knowledge of the finer points of the game spoiled many prominent movements. The Newton backs wer j superior find, with a liberal share ol the ball from the scrums, the rear division made the most of their chances.' Banham, tho Auckland player-coach, was ju prood form and scored Ihree fine tries. W. Brimble played a splendid game at halfback and received excellent support from E. Brimble, whose speed was most effective on attack. Tho best Canterbury backs were Brown, behind the scrum lind Whitley, at fiveeighths. Brown impressed just as much as he did in the Auckland match, although he was inclined to hold on too long. Whitley is a player of promise. Price, Barnard and Grimes n;erc the bes! of tho forwards. Near tho end of tho game the tempers of the forwards became frayed, and the referee had to stop play and is>ue a warning to two players on each side Tho Canterbury backs were prominent early In the game and Beri made a fine run liefore passing to Guy and Rope raced well into Newton territory. Canterbury's forwards rushed play to the Newton line, where W. Brimble started a passing bout and, after "W. McKcnzie raced to half-way, D. McKenzie passed on to Banham, who outpaced the opposition to score a good try. Dempsey was proininrnt in a good run end, with Ginders carried play bark to midfield. From a penalty Guy opened the visitors' score with a nice kick. Banham was always the pivot of the Newton attack, and hj» scored another nice try. E. and W. Brimble were associated in a nice passing bout, but L. Brown stopped Banham as the movement became dangerous. Price headed a dangerous Canterbury forward attack, but there was no finish to the movement. A few minutes later W McKcnzie beat the visitors' backs and scored for Banham to convert. From a passing bout E. Brimble cut in, but .his pass to Junes was forward, and Newton missed a try. Several times tho visitors' backs cot chances, but Brown was inclined to' hold on. Half-time came with the score:—Newton, 11; Canterbury, 2. Soon after the kick-off Barnard and Airey headed the Canterbury forwards, but tho former passed wildly when Brown may have scored. Canterbury, however, nas rewarded b minute later when Clark snapped up in the loose and scored for Davison to convert. Tho visitors' forwards played with more dash,in the loose,, but Newton continued to get the ball from the scrums. Good play byRope placed Canterbury in a good position, but the Newton barks had too much speed, and from a good. passing bout W. McKcnzie scored. Then Brown beat half the Newton team, but had little support to his good play. Canterbury was unlucky not to score_ when "Whitley made a good run well into Newton territory. Grey Campbell, at last evening's meeting of the board of control. This position would arise-if Newton defeated Marist and Mount Albert was successful, and a play-off between these three teams .would then be necessary. The Roope Rooster knock-out competition would have to be started,. and he suggested shat" the board meet at Carlaw Park to consider the position after Saturday's results were known. As Huntly was to" be admitted to the Roope Rooster competition, there would not be any byes. The chairman's suggestion .was "agreed to.
