BASKETBALL CONTEST
NEW ZEALANDERS' WIN DEFEAT OF QUEENSLAND (Received August 15, 7.-10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, August 15 At the basketball tournament to-day New Zealand beat Queensland, 13 —9. The New Zealanders' good positional play attracted attention, as did their sure handling and swift passing. The Australian footwork rules proved a great handicap and the players were continually penalised. The score at halftime was: New Zealand, 0, Queensland. 5. in the second spell New Zealand improved, with good defence and interceptions. M. Matangi and J. Mitchell kept Queensland's score down. Windy conditions made accurate shooting difficult. The New Zealand team comprised M. Matangi, J. Mitchell, E. Sinclair. M. Martin, J. Willson, E. Neame and J. Tyrell. Victoria beat New South Wales, 38—8, and South Australia beat Tasmania, 34 —12. An exhibition game under New Zealand rules will bo played to-morrow.
