RICCARTON HORSES

SALE OF SWORDSTICK NOT OUT ATTRACTS NOTICE ARGENTIC'S SEVENTH CUP RACE [by telegraph—own correspondent] CHRISTCnURCH. Monday Swordstick lias been sold by Mr. G. Fulton to the Dunedin owner-trainer D. P. Wilson, and the RapiOr gelding is to go south to-morrow, Swordstick has always been noted for his track ability, but his racing has not been in keeping with it. Iho two-year-old Not Out attracted attention by his good looks, and the prominent showing he made toward the finish of his trial in the juvenile parade Inst Thursday. Bred by his owner, Mr. G. Gould, lie is a well-grown chestnut colt by Winning Hit from the Paper Monoy mare, Dutch Money, who, like her dam, Dutch Clock, could claim a turn of speed. Not Out, who closely resembles his sire, was taken out of the John Grigg Stakes, to be run at Ashburton next month, but he is to contest the McLean Stakes at Wingatui. He is trained by F. Roberts, whoso stable will be represented in the John Grigg Stakes by Mr. H. D. Greenwood's filly Cyprene, by Posterity from Cyinene. This filly probably will also go on to Wingatui.

The Iliad filly Cyrillian, who, after her accident at Oamaru last year was retired to the stud, last week slipped a colt foal to Night Raid.

Tom Cat improved with every race ho had at the Grand National Meeting, and next year may find him entering the ranks of good steeplechase winners. He is to bo sent to Wingatui for the Otago Hunt meeting next week. Flashlight was suffering from the shoulder trouble which prevented him from racing at the South Canterbury and Christcluirch Hunt meetings when he contested the Beaufort Steeplechase on Saturday, and this probably accounted for some of the faulty jumps he made, one of these bringing him down three fences from home. He is to be turned out for a lengthy spell. Jolly Beggar was very stiff after his hard ordeal in the Grand National Hurdles, and he is to be put asido for three or four months. Although the Riccarton trainer, C. McCarthy, has a strong team in work, he did not have a horse racing at the Grand National Meeting. Monastic and Haughty Winner were expected to do battle for him, but both met with trouble. The latter has been suffering from the effects of a split heel, which caused a severely swollen leg, and the limb is only now getting back to normal. The check came at an unfortunate time, as Haughty Winner was in excellent order after returning from Trentham. He should soon be in action again to prepare for spring racing.

Argentic has gone on the right way since he rejoined the active ranks. It has been decided to prepare him once more for the New Zealand Cup. He lias the distinction of contesting three New Zealand Cups and three Auckland Cups, so that ho is now on the way to training for his seventh two-mile race, a record that very few horses, either in Australia or New Zealand, can claim.

WANGANUI DOINGS GUINEAS COLTS GALLOP AMIGO AND REHEARSAL WELL [from oub own correspondent] WANG ANUI, Monday An excellent six-furlong gallop in the course of their preparation for the Wanganui Guineas was recorded on Saturday morning by Amigo and Rehearsal, in company with Minga, who is also engaged in the classic, but is not likely to fulfil that engagement. Track and weather conditions were excellent, although the number one grass, on which the fast work was done, was easy on the surface after light showers earlier in the morning. Amigo (R. Bovd) beat Rehearsal (W. Rayner) by half a length over six furlongs in 1.19 2-5, with Minga, who began just behind them, two lengths away. Amigo and Rehearsal ran the first two in 25 2-ss, and the half-mile in a tick under 50s.

Amigo was plated but he was going well .Within himself over the final stnges. Rehearsal also had a little in hand. It v was a very satisfactory Guineas trial at this stage. The Fordell trainer D. T. Marks had his two Guineas candidates, Taurangi and Russian Ballet, on the track, but did not require them to travel at top over five furlongs, which each encompassed separately. Taurangi travelled smoothly to register 1.7. Russian Ballet, who took 25s for the first two, was eased up in the run home to record 1.7 1-5. Both appear to bo very well.

Darthura and Pekoe slipped over three furlongs in 39 4-ss. Darthura, who will carry the colours of Mr. A. Cameron, patron of the Wanganui Jockey Club, shaped very well in view of the fact that she has not hitherto been required to do much sprinting. Eurotas and March Easy, both from L. G. Butler's stable, were associated over four furlongs in 54 4-ss. March Easy is tho Nightmarch filly owned by Mr. H. M. Speed, president of the Wanganui Jockey Club, and sho had an advantage at the post. Eurotas appears to have been improved by his run at the Rangitikei Hunt meeting last month. , . Green Timber ran tho last five of six furlongß in 1.6 2-5, and appeared to be going well. Golden Pam slipped over four furlongs in 50 4-5s and did it nicely. The Lackham maro is well forward. Red Cat went four furlongs in 51 2-ss. As she was well out on the track, it was a creditable effort. Portal and Submission, the two-year-olds in W. Rayner's stable, worked at three-quarter pace. Ruatiti did useful work, but he is backward. Middlo did serviceable work and appears to bo well. Gay Maid, the Arausio mare in W. Dwyer's stable, did useful Avork.

ENGLISH TWO-YEAR-OLD PORTOBELLO GOOD WINNER Portohello, ono of England's best two-year-olds of this season, is a gelding. Up to the close of the Ascot meeting ho had been unbeaten in his four races. At Ascot he started at even money for the Windsor Castle Stakes, worth £1438 to tho winner, and won comfortably from 18 others in 1.1 4-5 for the five furlongs. Owned by Mr. P. Dunne, lie is by Koxlaw from Zingarello. by Solario, and cost 3GO guineas as a yearling. According to tho list of sales in Hull's Guide, lie was entire when sold.
