SWIMMING LESSONS

WINTER COACHING CLASSES Congratulations were extended by the council ot the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last week to the Auckland Centre on the coaching scheme it is conducting at the Tepid Baths during thcMvinter months. Lite classes take place fortnightly, the chief instructor being Mr. J). 13. Anderson, whoso assistant is N. Crump, the Kmpire Gaines representative and holder of the national record for 100 yards and 220 yards free-style. Coaches nominated by clubs give instruction under the supervision of the two chief coaches. Only those swimmers requiring coaching are allowed near the pool, and before changing into their bathing costumes they are assembled for a short Iqeture and demonstration by the chief coaches. Component parts of the stroke are explained, and each must be mastered before full swimming can bo attempted. The pupils are then divided into groups, and aro instructed by the assistant coaches. The scheme has so far proved very successful. As many as 50 were sent recently from tha . North oha. Club. JT
