NINE MEN CHARGED
GISBOKNE POLICE ACTIVE PENALTIES £25 TO £35 } BETTING OUTSIDE RACECOURSE [BT TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] GISBORNE, Monday As a sequel to raids on Saturdaynine men appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., this morning, charged with various offences under the Gaming Act. Five defendants were remanded and the remaining four were fined front £25 to £35. Robert George Burt was charged with carrying on the business of ai bookmaker. Detective-Sergeant Mo Whirter said that when arrested Burt' had a double chart and sweepstake tickets on the Australia-New Zealand Rugby test. He was convicted and fined £3O. Albert Victor Singe was charged witK He pleaded guilty to betting outside the course at the recent Poverty Bay races. Inflicting a fine ofi £35, the magistrate said that accused was convicted on a. similar charge ia 1937, and since then was convicted ofi trespassing on a racecourse. Under the same circumstances, Maurice William Costello pleaded guilty to carrying on the business of a bookmaker at the Poverty Bay races, and was fined £35. Albert Taniwha Horsfall was charged with bookmaking. Detective McWhirter said accused was on relief works, and was carrying on in a small way. Counsel said accused had operated in' a small way on Saturdays, more as a means of excitement than of profit. 'lhe magistrate said that as ho was a firsij offender he would be fined £25. COMMON GAMING HOUSE OFFENCE AT RUNANGA v [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] GREYMOUTH, Monday At the Magistrate's Court, Williaflf Paul O'Neill was fined £2O for usrn® premises at Runanga as a common gaming house. - .
