COUNCIL'S ERROR

UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CITY A statement that the City Council had notified him that an error had been made in appointing Dr. 11. G. McElrov as its representative on the college council was made by the president, Mr. W. PI. Cocker, at a meeting of the Auckland University College Council yesterday. The present council representative is Mr. G. G. Grant, whoso term of appointment by the last City Council does not normally expire until next year. Dr. McElroy notified the council of his desire to resign from the position of lecturer in commercial law consequent upon his appointment to represent tho City Council on tho college council. Mr. Cocker said notification of the error of the City Council had been received, but Dr. McElroy had informed him that he still wished to resign, and that his intention to resign dated before the City Council's appointment. It was decided to accept the resignation as from the end of the third term. MR. GRANT'S POSITION RETENTION OF HIS SEAT A statement defining his position in connection with the Auckland University College Council was made yesterday by Mr. G. G. Grant. He said that when it was announced in July that Dr. 11. G. McElroy had been chosen as the City Council's representative on tho college council, he wrote to the registrar, Mr. L. 0. Desborough, and in reply received a letter informing him that tho Auckland University College Amendment Act, 1912, section six, provided that his term of office should bo for two years, that was, to the end of Juno, 1939. Mr. Grant said he also received from tho Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, a letter expressing regret that the mistake should have been made, and stating that ho proposed to take tho steps necessary to rescind the resolution appointing Dr. McElroy. Mr. Grant concluded by announcing his intention of completing his term of office as a member of the college council.
