GOLF CONTESTS

CLUB COMPETITIONS PLAY ON HEAVY FAIRWAYS CLOSE MATCHES DECIDED

Competitions were held by the various local golf clubs on Saturday. Fairways were again heavy but although thero were occasional showers during the afternoon conditions generally were quite fair. In the fifth round of the Taylor Bowl competition at Titirangi, J. H. Young .defeated A. Harvey at the 17th. The other matches were also closely contested, H. D. Brinsden and C. Robinson •winning from R. G. Tappenden and P. Harrison respectively. There were some excellent cards returned in a fcur-ball bogey, the winners being J. Garnachan and N. A. Jsiaismith, who finished 10 tip. H. T. Jaffrey and J. H. Young were 9 up, while other pairs to score well were R. F. Ward and W. J. Davidge and H., V. Ganley and J. Gilmour. In the play-off for the Fuller Memorial Clip at Akarana, J. 0. Mitchell returned a splendid 69 net to win from T. J. Lawson and 0. J. Learwood. Mitchell was also successful in the senior medal event which was played in conjunction with the qualifying rohnd for the Howey Walker "trophies. C. S. M. Edwards won the junior medal. In the semi-finals of the Edwards Trophy, . Mitchell defeated Lawson, and H. E. Bridgens accounted for M. Adams.

The scoring in a four-ball best-ball Stableford bogey at Middlemore was good, the -winners being W. K. Paterson and J. W. Gunn, who had the remarkable total of 4b points. Four pairs, W. Wilson and W. Wilson junior, K. M. Wilson and B. H. Menzies, T. GUI and W. S. Douglas and H. P. Richmond and H. It. Kirker were next with 42 points. The 'second round of the Bledisloe Cup was played at Maungakiekie, those retaining their places being 0. Rainger.'.L. T. Wilson, J. L. Gregory. J. R. Barber and H. T- Wliyilian. Three pairs finished o up in a four-ball bogey and J. Self and E. Ballantyne won on the count-back. With a round of 73, H. \\ ■ Bell headed- the qualifiers in the Otahuhu Club's senior championship, and« lie was followed by W. B. Eustace and J. L. Clark. An excellent round or (o enabled A. R. Jones to lead the intermediate, while W. J. McAllen was the best of the juniors. . , ~ Matches in the second round of tile Jubilee Cup at North Shore were alevenlv contested. A. E. Browne was defeated by J. C. Bates and H. U Stevens was forced to, play three additional holes before -winning his match. A bogey match at Pupuke was won bv J. Drought, while N. G. Fletcher was successful in a Stableford bogey at Remuera. A. L. Graham and Graham were the -winners of an asisxregate Stablel'ord bogey at Glendowie.
