amateur championships OPENING BOUTS TO-NIGHT The Auckland amateur boxing championships will be commenced at the Town Hall to-night and there is the usual large and representative entry. The championships will be continued for thrco nights, and it would appear that patrons can look forward to plenty of hard, willing encounters. Although several prominent amateurs who are present title-holders will be competing. practically every division contains sufficient difficult opposition to keep the issue in cloubt up to the finals. Last year's champions taking part in Ilia tournament are E. Underwood, H. Sheri- j dan, Sammy Stock, Ken Moran, Dick Branch, I H. Xeale and Maurice McHugh. At the Waikato championships last week Sheridan and Branch carried off t lie bantam-weight I and middle-weight titles respectively and demonstrated that they arc fighting well up to form. Another local exponent who performrd well and secured a title was Henry Stock, and his progress at the Auckland championships will be watched with almost as much interest as that of his brother Sammy, the present bantam-weight title-holder. The winner In each section will receive a medal and a special trophy, and a medal will bo presented to the runner-up. JARVIS LOSES TITLE [bt telegraph—press association] BLENHEIM, Sunday Clarrie Rayner, Blenheim, former New Zealand professional feather-weight boxing champion, lifted the light-weight title from Jack Jarvis Eltham, last night. The loser retired at the end of the ninth round after being outpunched and outstayed nearly all the way. The crowd was kept in a high pitch of excitement by the most dashing exhibition lof fast two-handed punching by both contestants seen for years.
