FIFTY YEARS AGO
NATIVE CLASH IN NORTH A dispute between two sections of the Ngapuhi tribe over a block of land near Te Poroti, about 14 miles from Whangarei, culminated in an open battle being waged by the rival factions 50 years ago. The following is an extract from the New Zealand Herald of August 13, 1888: — "The survey was about to be commenced by Mr. Andrew Wilson yesterday, and "he sent a party to put up a flag on a hill, to test the threats one of the parties had made. The flag w, 38 pulled down . by some of Eru Hiri's people and hostilities commenced. Up to the latest news received, there had been several natives killed aud others wounded. Mr. Clendon (the Resident Magistrate) and two constables have cone out to the scene of the trouble. There are about 70 natives on one side *utd 120 on the other."
