Niki of Paris Says... "Let's Go Ski-ing"

AT St. Moritz, St. Anton and hundreds of other winter resorts abroad you would see in the season all the exciting ski clothes you have ever dreamed of in action on the snow. For winter sports clothes are taken very seriously by designers, who are often experts themselves, ski-ing and the like being favourite pastimes of smart Europeans. Hence they create suits which are excellently workmanlike and which are at once correct, new and gay. Intriguing colour schemes are foiled perfectly against the glistening white of the snow; and sweaters, scarves and odds and ends such as belts, gloves and socks are sensible, yet amusing. Believing that trousers should be long and moderately full, the designers favour the conservative and sombre shades of grey, black and navy as being most popular. You might occasionally see a pair with two or three narrow bands of vivid hue streaking right down the side seams. It is the jackets, however, that express the most individual interpretations of colour, sometimes a back being in contrast to the front and sleeves, or tlio front of the bodico being striped all over witb some gay design while the rest of the garment is severely

plain. Designers assert that these jackets ibould be long enough to cover an}' gaps and spaces between the trousers and under-sweaters, such as usually occur in movement. So jackets are brought down well on to the hips and padded with leather on the shoulders as a protection when carrying skis. Jackets and gloves made of lambskin have the fleece turned inwards for warmth, and the hide outside makes an impenetrable barrier against the wind and snow. If you are bound for the snows, bear these points in mind before choosing those ski-ing strides and wind-jackets, for protective garments will servo you in good stead in any of the funny positions you are quite likely to land up in, especially if you are a beginner!
