AUCKLAND TRAVEL CLUB
ADDRESS on world affairs VISITORS FROM ENGLAND An interesting address on the position m Europe was given to members of the Auckland Travel Club yesterday by Dr. T. H. Greenwood, lecturer in philosophy at the London University. Mrs. Victor Macky profiled. The nations of Central Europe were widely different in language and dress, said Dr. Greenwood, but a more important point, was that each one had a basically different philosophy of iil'e. For instance, there was an almost fanatical belief in the importance of the state i' l Germany, semi-dictatorships were established in Poland and Hungry, and the Chechoslovakians had strong democratic ideals. Unfortunately, whatever tho division of Central Europe there would be groups of different nationalities forced to live under alien rule. Thus thero would always bo unrest. Dr. Greenwood said that he could see little hope of lasting peace, for, even ;f the present problem was solved, there probably would be a war between Poland and Germany in two or three vears, when the existing peace treaty elapsed. If any country was to make war with England, concluded Dr. Greenwood, it would be done i?i the hope of gaining some of her colonies through treaty. In that event New Zealanders would bo expected to stay in their own country in case of trouble in the Pacific. A short talk was given by Miss Myrtle E. Hounsell, an English woman who was a V.A.'D. in a New Zealand hospital during the world war. Shoulder sprays were presented to Miss Hounsell and Mrs. Greenwood. Members of the committee present were Mrs. Charles Martyn, Mrs. G. T. Simpson, Mrs. Archibald Bishop. Mrs. G. Anderson. Mrs. McKenzie Wilson, Mrs- J. A. C. Allum and Mrs. A. F. O'Donoghue. The overseas and out-of-town visitors included Dr. and Mrs. T. H. Greenwood (London), Miss M. E. Hounsell (England), Mrs. M. E. MacEwan and MrsfM. Betteridge (Invercargill), Mrs. C. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Taylor (Christchurch), Mrs. Jeffrey (Te Awaliiutu), Mrs. F. M. Brinkman (Te Aroha), Mrs. L. Eslilin (Morrinsville) and Mrs,'K. Trimball (Hamilton).
