MAN WITH NINE CHILDREN PROBLEM FOR MAGISTRATE [IIV TKLKGHAI'H —PHKSS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday "I am really wondering what to do with a man like this, who has so many hostages," said .Air. E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Alfred George Webb, a married man with nine children, appeared on a charge of being intoxicated while in chargeoovaf v a car. Webb was fined £ls, in default 30 days' imprisonment, his licence was cancelled and endorsed, and he was declared mi lit to bold another licence for 12 months. .Defendant, said counsel, was the father of nine children, and any penalty would probably affect them. Webb had spent tho night in gaol, and, in addition, the degree of intoxication had been mild. The money for a fi,ne had been guaranteed by a friend of Webb's. "It is the nine children that are troubling me," said the magistrate, "and it is difficult to know what to do with these men." ALCOHOL'S EFFECTS SUFFERER FROM WAR INJURIES [«Y TKT.ECJHATH —I'UKSS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday The effect alcohol is stated to have, particularly on people suffering from war injuries, was the subject of comment by .Mr. .J. L. Stout, S..Mwhen Harold llorner, aged 12, a plasterer, was charged with intoxication m charge of a car. It was stated by counsel that the amount of liquor consumed by defendant would have n greater effect than in a man in a normal state of health. Mr. Stout's comment was that with that knowledge tlicy should leave it alone altogether. It was not much use coming into Court and saying the reason alcohol took effect was so and so, when a man knew very well it would have that effect on him. Defendant was fined £'2s, his licence was cancelled 1 and ho was prohibited from obtaining another for a further poriod of two years. CAR AND TRUCK COLLIDE NO LICENCE FOR THREE YEARS [I3V TKI.ECatAI'H —I'ItHSS ASSOCIATION*] ASH BURTON, Friday As a result of a collision at Wakaniji last evening, Thomas Stanley White ippearcd before Mr. Morgan, S.M., •barged with having been intoxicated in •barge of a car. Accused was fined .LIo ind his licence was cancelled, for three rears. The collision was between accused's car and a truck driven by Christopher John West, farmer, of Eiflelton, who received severe injuries to the head. Mrs. West was slightly injured.
