FARM INSTRUCTORS
ANOTHER ADDED COST APPOINTMENTS CRITICISED MORE PRESSING NEEDS ✓ [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] PUKEKOHE, Friday The appointment by the Government of 35 additional dairy instructors was criticised at a meeting of the Franklin sub-provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Union to-day. Mr. D. Kenton considered it a reprehensible step to saddle the industry with what ho termed a further 35 non-producing units. "If there is need for an improvement within tho industry, it is :a national responsibility and should be paid for by the community as a whole," said Mr. W. Draper, of the Drury branch. His branch supported a Clevedon remit as follows: —"That tho money required for the 35 additional inspectors could be spent to the better advantage of the industry in particular and the Dominion in general if used to finance veterinary and grassland research." Mr. C. A. Moore, East Tam.aki, said lie agreed that the industry had more pressing needs than the appointment of more inspectors. It was rather an anomaly that, although the farmers could not obtain labour to work their farms, instructors could be appointed to tell them what to do. "Year by year the quality of our dairy products is improving, but wo are not getting anything more for them; if anyone benefits, it is the consumer, and he should pay," he declared. IJo suggested that the instructors should be paid out of the Consolidated Fund. "I think therp is a definite need for improvements and more hygienic methods on the average farm," said the ohairman, Mr. R. Glasgow. Expert advice, available to all, would be of advantage to the whole industry. When put to the meeting the remit was lost.
