NATIONAL STAKES

KING'S WARRIOR SCORES TRACK PROVES VERY TRICKY double event to marsceres IRONSIDE DEFEATS SPRINTERS [BY TELKGIiAni —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday The New Zealand Metropolitan Troting Club s Grand National meeting was continued at Addington to-day, and, while there was little sensational in the racing, several good performances were witnessed. The track was much better than was generally expected, but all through the day it was tricky, and only certain horses could handle it. "The National Challenge Stakes, intended as a trial between the crack pacers and trotters, was not a success. Only one pacer. King's Warrior, raced in anything like his true form. Lucky Jack, a hot favourite, was in troublo at the end of half a furlong. Ginger Jack was soon- in the same plight, and War Buoy, a reputed mudlark, could make no impression. In the meantime Sea Gift, who plainly was suffering from an injury received, set a fast paco and had two other good trotters, Peggotty and Wahnooka, well beaten a long way from home. King's Warrior had picked up the field and was going along comfortably at the straight entrance, and he was allowed to come up on the rails. He won very easily in what might be regarded as a poor field on the day. The win of the Auckland trainer, F. J. Smith, was popular. He still further improved his record when he won the Speedway Handicap with the former Canterbury 'pacer Ironside, who appreciated the going much better than he had done on the opening day. Marsceres recorded his third victory for the meeting when he followed on his first day's success by winning a mile in saddle and a mile and a-half in harness. In each race he won with consummate ease, and the excellent horsemanship of S. G. McKendry helped him to victory. The dividend of more than half a century paid to win supporters by Ace Pot was not altogether surprising. Ho had the run of the race in the Lincoln Handicap and was favoured in the straight.- Lament scored a decisive win in the Avon Handicap, after making a pace that had all the others struggling from-the start. From a 2.53 mark he registered 2.50, and, outside Marsceres, who did 2.11 3-5 from a 2.13 majrk in the mile saddle race, ho was the only winner during tho day to better his handicap time. The investments were £38,431, compared with £48,290 10s invested on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £QSS9 10s.
