VALUES IN WAIKATO

DIFFICULT WEATHER DAIRY CATTLE ERRATIC BEEF SECTION FIRM With the continued rough weather and consequent shortage of feed, the' 5 market for dairy cattle tended. to be erratic. While some good gnJes :havo been recorded and in some cases outstanding heifers close to profit have realised up to £l3 los, the majority of good heifers are making between £9 and £lO, with poorer quality from £6 upwards. Values in other sections show little alteration from t-hoife of last week, except for beef which ia firmer. • ... . A noticeable feature at .each of the three centres, Frankton, Morrihsville and Te Awanuitu, is that butchers from outlying districts have been operating and with this additional competition, larger yardings have been cleared at improved prices. While beef is plentij ful these buyers are able to iilL their [ requirements in their own districts and their operations at these sales is a good indication of a further rise in prices. Although store cattle are. coining forward in only small numbers, competition for offerings of this class; is good. At the central yards a line of particularly well-grown yearling Polled Angus steers in good condition were auctioned at prices from £4 4s to £6. leading Jersey heifers also meet with a ready demand at "prices ranging from £3 10s to £o os, according to size and quality. At all Waikato centres,, the beef market which has been firming for the. past three weeks, has more than maintained recent improved rates and indications are that prices will rise for some weeks yet. At the Morrinsville auction on Friday, there was a good yarding of well-finished cattle which were cleared under keen competition at improved values. Some pens of particularly well-done three-year-old."" Jersey heifers made to £8 14s. At the Frankton sale on Tuesday there was -again a good display of both ox and ccw beef which sold under steady competition from a large and representative bench of buyers. Values were fully firm and in some instances in excess of last week's quotations. Prices up to £l6 were paid for a pair of heavy prime Shorthorn bullocks and this is the best price obtained in these yards for some months. While extra choice ox. was - quoted up to 36s per 1001b., the hulk of the offering was traded at 30s to 31s per 1001b. Extra choice young cow and heifer beef made 30s to 335, and prime cow, 27s to 295": Conditions in the various classes are as follows: • ; . MUTTON Fat sheep continue to come forward in pood numbers and although conditions are not nearly as buoyant as in the beef section, prime mutton maintains recent values. There is still a fair percentage of unfinished sheep on offer and apparently due to -the shortage of feed farmers are forced to dispose" of them earlier than anticipated. Consequently no sharp rise im values can be expected while this class keep coming on to the market. A good yalding of fat hoggets were disposed or at satisfactory figures. Heavy - prime fat wethers made 30s to 32s Gd; prime wethers, 2Ss to ais lid; lighter. 25s to 27s (3d; unfinished, lSs Gd to 245; extra prime young ewes, to 2lis lid;- heavy prime ewes. 20s to 22s Od; medium-weights, 18s to 19s 6d; lighter, 15s to 17s 6d; fat - hoggets, 18s 6d to 23s Od. PIGS ■ Pennings of fat pigs are light and in some cases are only sufficient for butchers' requirements. Buttermilk feeders are-also anxious to secure supplies of pigs large enough to carry oil and finish for the early market and they also compete strongly in the fat section. As a consequence competition is particularly keen for all good quality and prices are extremely iiigh.' Smaller stores and weaners are also in strong demand and here again prices are in vendors-' favour. Breeding sows elicit keen bidding and realise up to £S for choice young sows. > TE KAUWHATA OFFERING G. W. Yercoe and Company..- Limited, , reports a small entry of cattle at Te Kauwhata.
