BARBAEIANS' FIFTEEN AUCKLAND MATCH DESIRED CANCELLATION OF FIXTURES PANMURE CLUB'S POSITION Tlio management committee of the Auckland Eugb.v Union discussed last evening the possibility of a match between the Barbarians' team, composed largely of former Auckland and All Black players, and an Auckland fifteen of some description. The chairman, Mr. A. Baker, said it was doubtful if 'a fixture could bo made this season unless the senior competition came to a premature conclusion, in which case it""may bo possible to match the Auckland colts' team against the Barbarians on September 2-1 or October 1. Mr. G. Orrell Every effort should be made to stage the match, as it would create great public interest, and, seeing the Barbarians had offered their services, they should be availed of if possible. Mr. O. S. Harvey proposed that the match committee be instructed to make arrangements if possible for a match against the Barbarians, and the motion was carried. It was reported that, arrangements had been made to play a match between two of the union's leading senior teams, Grammar Old Boys and Technical Old Boys, at Papakura next Saturday. Mr. 0. S. Haryey was ap. pointed the union's representative for tht occasion. Grounds Unplayable There was a further discussion of the can ce'lation of matches set down for the Ellerslii ground on July 30. letters being receivec fro,m the Referees' Association and from thi two referees who had been appointed to con trol the games on that particular day. The Referees' Association stated in it letter -that, if the union had been mformei that the ground was unplayable, it was re grettable that the teams and referees ha< not been notified. The two referees, Messrs S. R. and R. L. Burk, stated in their lette that they considered the ground would nav been fit for play if marked out. It was explained that the Ellerslie Towi Board officials, on deciding that the groun< was unfit for play, notified the Panmur club and no one else. A motion was cat ried requesting local authorities controllini suburban grounds to notify the union s ofnc immediately in the event of any ground beim deemed unplayable. Mr. J. Sweeney said when matches wer cancelled the referees should be notified, i ever a referee failed to appear for a mate! there was always an inquiry, but on Satui day last a referee went all the way to Her derson and found on arrival that there wa no match. Unreinstated Player „ The junior management board, in it weekly report, referred to the fact that th Panmure second grade team had twice ir eluded A. Beyer, an unreinstated Leagu J. Carr stated that he others c the junior management board had discusse this and other matters with .the Panmur club, but they were not aware at that tun that Beyer' had played for Panmure again. EC Mr la Sweenej rd said that --it jjwas reporte to the referee at half-time that Beyer wa playing and that his name was not on th team-sheet. Ihe referee was a newcomer t the district and did not know Beyer by sigh but he had made the Panmure captain pu his name on the list. . The matter is to be taken up with th Panmure club, and it was stated that th Panmure team would be debited with losse for the matches concerned. Another case referred to in the junto management board's report was that or Grafton intermediate player who was ordore off the field last Saturday, and whose ider titv the referee was unable to discover, l spite of diligent inanity from his team-mate and the club officials present. The board r< ported that it had asked the Grafton clu for an explanation , . The Primary Schools Union wrote thank , ing the union'for staging the Calixtus anHarrv Frost Shields finals at Eden Park, ani stating that the union's support contribute ereatly to the success of its activities. The Sacred Heart College team was grants nermi'sion to travel ,to Stratford to pja, against Stratford High School on August 2C The Auckland Referees Association va granted permission to send a team to Weil ington to play the "Wellington referees for th Green Shield, on September 10. RANFURLY SHIELD RETENTION BY OTAGO CANTERBURY SIDE DEFEATEI SIXTEEN POINTS TO SEVEN [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION'] , DUNEDIN, Wednesday , The Ranfurly Shield, won from South j land 10 days ago, was successfully de ! fended by Otago against Canterbur ! this afternoon by 16 points to 7. Th Carisbrook ground had made a goo< i recovery from the rain of last weel I and the weather was fine. A crowd o ; about 10,000 saw the game, which wa i bright and fast without producing an; outstanding Rugby/' Before the match the Otago sido was no considered a particularly strong one, but 1 proved a sounder combination, back and foi ward, than Canterbury. The visitors wo more than their share of the ball froi the scrums and line-outs, but the form 0 their backs was disappointing, and it wa not until late in the game, when thei chances of winning were gone, that the were in charge for a period. Even the Otago's defence was not seriously threatenec Otago's 1G points comprised two tries two penalty goals and one field goal, whil Canterbury scored by means of a field goa and a penalty goa' The Canterbury forwards started off b winning tho ball consistently in the openin stages and it appeared that its backs ha only to link up well for Otago to be 1 trouble. Honours of possession from th scrums, line-outs and rucks remained wit Canterbury throughout the game, but a pre. nounced weakness close to the scrum and th inability of the visiting backs to hand! safely and attack with any thrust 111 thei passing movements made it possible for th Otago forwards and inside backs to breal through repeatedly. There was little between the two packs except in the matter of securing ball posse? sion. Vorrath set the Otago pack a nn example, playing one of his best games am leading many dangerous rushes. He scorei one trv and was directly responsible for th | best try of the day. Failure of their back made a lot of difference to the Canterbur. ' packmen. Their work merited better suppor ! from the back division, i Nolan, the Canterbury fullback, played 1 i very fine game, fielding, tackling and kick I ing safely, and at times brilliantly, but In ' was the only Canterbury back to earn un qualified praise Hadlee, at centre, showe( gome dash, but was handil-apped by the poo football of the men inside him, and thi wingers did not get a chance to use thei « pace. i In marked contrast there were no obviou I weaknesses in Otago's back line. P. Howdei played a serviceable game behind the scrum 1 Trevathan was in good form, while Gilnei ! was the most aggressive of tho inside back: on either side.Trevathan gave Otago an early lead b: kicking a penalty goal at his third attempt ! but Canterbury was in front for the onb j time when White kicked a field goal. I' was a well-executed move and the ball jus' I skimmed the bar. Vorrath led a short pass i ing rush, which travelled right, into Can i terbury's corner The ball came back to hin and he threw a long pass infield for Gillies to send Perriam and McCartney away, ant the latter scored a fine try. Vorrath anc Neiper were prominent in a burst from s line-out soon afterwards and Vorrath scored giving Otago a 9 —l lead at half-time. A fine field goal by Trevathan made It 13 —4 after a quiet opening to the second half. Hadlee missed two long penalty shot: for Canterbury and White took the ncxl and put it. over, Perriam took a shot from a fair anglo and made the final score 10 tc 7 in Otago's favour. FRIENDLY GAME AT DOMAIN The Rugby match between the Rest ol the Auckland University and Law resultei in a win for the Law team by default. I scratch game was played at the Domain some of the law students playing for thi Rest, and this was won by the combined tean by 12 points to 3.
