SPANISH WAR
POSSIBLE DURATION DECISION WITH DICTATORS OPINIONS HELD IN PARIS ASSISTANCE FOR FRANCO By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright PARIS, August 4 It is thought that there is every likelihood of the Spanish war continuing for another year unless either Herr Hitler or Signor Mussolini moves to assist General Franco in defeating the Government forces before the winter. Journalists of the Right and of the Left are equally doubtful whether Signor Mussolini will openly reinforce General Franco before the end of the summer in order to assure him of victory. There is a firm belief that any assistance will come from Signor Mussolini, sinco Herr Hitler is regarded as being fully occupied with the Czechoslovakian question. L'Europo Nouvelle, of which "Pertinax" is now editor, sums up the general feeling by saying: "In Spain the Duce will hesitate at nothing in order to make General Franco's army win before October, for he knows that in the Nationalist zone the greater part of the population, even though curbed and dragooned, will not easily accept another winter of carnage and destruction. Will one Dictator or the other iet himself go in irreparable acts? It will probably depend on the reply each makes to this question: Does time work for the Totalitarian States or against them?"
