UNUSUAL CONTEST PACERS AND TROTTERS LUCKY JACK'S SUPERIORITY MARSCERES IN SADDLE RACE [BY TELECIIAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday P*or the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting there is any number of horses to provide first-class racing. On a good track, the first day's form may be upset, especially with fresh horses competing. Interest is being taken in the Challenge Stakes, a race between pacers and trotters, but the committee has only considered four trotters against the pacers. Peggoty, Sea Gift and Wahnooka represent tho best available in the trotters' class, while Discord, who was also eligible, will compete in the Avon Handicap, in which Waikato Prince is also engaged. Peggoty's time for two miles, 0.8, on Saturday, was little worse than that of the crack pacers in the August Handicap. Sea Gift failed badly, but on a better track she and Peggoty will carry strong support. Pacers Preferred Lucky Jack possibly is the best pace* in New Zealand to-day. With a quick beginning, lie may early get within range of tho trotters, and with him should be Ginger Jack and King's Warrior. Tho trotters will have to be kept up to their work from the start, and speculators may prefer the chances of Lucky Jack, Ginger Jack and King's Warrior. Walter Wrack does not handle a heavy track to advantage, but on Saturday 110 did not make a serious mistake. 011 Wednesday ho may make things interesting 111 the Improvers' Handicap. He may find Prince Hai'vester and Pilot Peter a pair to bo reckoned with. In the Dash Handicap, a saddle event, a limit of 36yds. should see the field bunched throughout. Horsemanship counts for much, and thoro are few better riders in New Zealand than G. McKendry, who will have the mount 011 Marseeres. A handicap of 12yds. should not bo beyond tho Man o' War gelding, who is also engaged in the Canterbury Handicap. Colonel Grattan, lisplendor, Southern Smile and Worthy King are the horses most likely to trouble Marseeres in tho saddle race. Waipahi Likely to Improve Waipahi finished third in the Selwyn Handicap, and 110 appears to bo a decided prospect foi the Canterbury Handicap. Toorak and Mystery Yet may prove his most formidable opponents. Donor did not show his true form 011 tho opening day, but with a finnor track 110 should do bettor in the Lincoln Handicap. Ho will meet Southern Chief, who was not started 011 Saturday, and Cavan Chief, who may do better next time out. The Avon Handicap, of a mile and a-half, is the favourite distance of Bittersweet. Discord and Flotsam may also take a hand in the finish. Even from 156 yds. behind in the Speedway Handicap, Reporter will have to be considered. However, Blair Athol is racing consistently and, with King s Play, he may fully extend Reporter.

ARRIVAL OF GAILLARD WELL-ACCREDITED PACER The pacing horse Gnillard, who was formerly in If. Holmes' establishment in Christchurch, arrived in Auckland yesterday and was at once tsiken. to the property of Misses N, and M. lidwards. at Otahuhu. Gnillard is a six-year-old son or Rev de Oro and Bonny Logan, 2.7 1-5. He took a two-year-old record of 2.50 1-5, a three-year-old record of 3.20, and at four years lie recorded 3.16 2-5. Gaillard will bo kept in work and will probably do a light season at the stud, racing later in the year. His present assessments aro 2.15, 2.49, 3.25 and 4.37.
