FLOODING PROBLEMS
THAMES VALLEY DRAINAGE BREACHES IN STOPBANK i ■ —— [by TELEGRAPH —OWN' correspondent] TE AROHA, Friday Seeking the support of the Thames Valley Drainage Board in making representations to the Public Works Department for the construction of a larger flood gate to the main central drain at Mangaiti, a deputation of four settlers waited on the board at its monthly meeting. The drain has been in varying stages of flood for the past three months.
Mr. F. M. Strange explained that three 6ft. drains converged on a single channel, from which the only outlet to the Wailiou River was a 4ft. flood gate. . As a result only about one-third of the water escaped and the rest was flooding valuable pasture land. On his property 120 acres were under water ana on his brother's 200 acres. The property toward the Awaiti received the run-off and most of it was flooded to a great depth. The board decided to urge that a > new flood gfito be installed, and to make an effort to improvo the drain as soon as the water subsided.
The clerk, Mr. H. Rowbotham, reporting on the flooded areas in the Awaiti area, said that 011 the property of a ratepayer in the Netherton drainage district the stopbank had been cut through in four places, showing that tho water had poured off into the boundary drain and then into the Thames Valley drainage district. This cutting was in contravention of tho understanding with the Netherton Drainage Board that the bank should be left intact. It was decided to draw the attention of the Netherton board to tho matter. The chairman, Mr. F. E. Hughes, said he realised that tho board would probably know nothing about the cutting.
