POOR MINING EXHIBITS j Concern at the inadequacy of the mining exhibits in the Xew Zealand Court at the Melbourne Exhibition was expressed in* the newspapers in the colony half a century ago. 'The following is n cablegram published in thq, Xkw Zealand Hkrald of August 6, 18S8: — "I regret to say that the mining exhibits in the New Zealand Court are a total failure and are hopelessly beaten by Tasmania, Queensland and the other colonies. Immediate action is required to remedy this fatal mistake. Air. Witheford, whc. is at present here, has written to Sir Harry Atkinson, offeringto contribute the sum of £IOO toward obtaining an adequate representation or the mining resources of New Zealand, so to assist in creating confidence 1 the col on v."
