BEAUTIFYING SCHEMES
TREE-PLANTING APPROVED OTAHUHU AND WESTFIELD Proposals for further tree-planting schemes ivere adopted at a meeting of the Great South Road Beautifying Council, when it was reported that shrubs and trees had been removed without authority from two of the roadside reserves under the council's control. Mr. A. Butterworth, of Papakura, stated that the reserves concerned were those at Takanini and Manurewa. It was decided to replace the trees with new plants and to have further planting undertaken on" the slopes of the Tamaki River below St. Mary's Homes at Otahuhu. The Otahuhu Borough Council is to be requested to assist in clearing the noxious weeds from the lower sections. The beautifying by planting of the Sylvia Park reserve at Westfield was also approved. Consideration was given to proposals for the straightening of the Great South Road in the vicinity of the Takanini reserve. The council was of the opinion that the works could be parried out without affecting the plantation. The chairman, Mr. G. W. Hutchison. was authorised to make representations in that light to the authorities. It was agreed to adopt a suggestion that the native trees and shruhs on the reserve fronting the Police Department property at Otahuhu be named for the benefit of children. This was considered desirable in view of the close proximity ( of the Otahuhu district school. It was reported that the Railway Department had cleared and planted with tea tree and native flora the reserve at Mahia.
